The Diagnostic Protocol: Mastering Multimodal Imaging - Podcast

Activity Description

In this second installment of a four-part educational series on Macular Telangiectasia Type 2 (MacTel), TFG’s expert consensus group outlines a comprehensive, multimodal diagnostic protocol designed to identify structural and functional loss before irreversible visual decline occurs.

The consensus group details the essential role of OCT as the diagnostic cornerstone and highlights characteristic features such as inner and outer retinal cavitation with preserved foveal contour, ILM draping, and ellipsoid zone attenuation. They also discuss complementary modalities including fluorescein angiography, fundus autofluorescence, and OCT angiography in the context of detecting telangiectatic vessels, pigment loss, capillary dropout, and secondary choroidal neovascularization and provide guidance on incorporating MacTel into the differential diagnosis and emphasize that good visual acuity does not exclude significant functional impairment. The goal, they explain, is proactive detection rather than reactive recognition in late-stage atrophy.

By the conclusion of this episode, clinicians will be equipped to implement a structured diagnostic workflow that integrates structural and vascular imaging to improve early identification and disease monitoring.
